Convert Flash To HTML5 With Google Swiffy

Looking for a simple, stable and significant VPS as your web hosting? Check out DigitalOcean, only $5 per month, and you can get $10 in credit just for signing up now.

I prefer HTML5 than flash, since you can watch videos on both mobile browsers and computer browsers without installing the Flash Player.

Google must also like HTML5, so that they just launched a new product — Swiffy, which is a site for you to convert flash to HTML5 online for free.

You upload a flash SWF file from your computer, confirm that you have the right to upload the file, and click the "Upload and convert" button, then your SWF file will be automatically converted to a HTML5 file, which you can preview and download.

But not all flash files are supported, in fact, Google Swiffy now only supports "a subset of SWF 8 and ActionScript 2.0", and "exporting your Flash animation as a SWF 5 file might give better results". For the other format SWF files, there will be something wrong with the converted HTML5 file, even though which you can play and download at last.

For example, when converting the happy birthday greeting card mentioned in this post, I got many errors:

swiffy error

Although there were so many errors, I could still convert the SWF file to a HTML5 file as well as to preview and download it. For the converted HTML5 file, it seems OK when previewing, but NOT OK when downloading and viewing offline, as what you can see from the following image:

Swiffy Output Error

There was an unexpected video screen on the same page!

You can download your HTML5 video in 15 minutes before it expires on the Google Swiffy’s page, then you can upload and publish it on your blog or website. But for a WordPress blog, this process is complexed, there will be some easy ways for you to insert a HTML5 video on the WordPress blog in the future I think.
